Bunion Pain – Taking the Right Steps to Eliminate the Problem

Bunion pain caused by bunions or hallux valgus is a deformity of the foot which causes the big toe to tilt inwards or towards other toes while the base of the toe has a bony protuberance, looking swollen and turning painful. The tilting of the toe causes enlargement of the metatarso-phalangeal joint. This deformity is what grows into the bump so often associated with the bunions. Bunions can often be caused by wearing uncomfortable shoes although, there is much debate on what leads primarily to bunions. There are several ways to eliminate this painful condition.

Wearing the Right Shoes

Although one cannot be sure if bunion pain is caused solely by wearing high heels & narrow toed shoes, it can definitely be eliminated by wearing the right kind of shoes and avoiding the shoes that cramp or crowd the toes. Bunion pain could be inherited or developed over the years depending on the foot types and how the pressure is distributed on the feet. However, wearing comfortable shoes with wide toes have often helped in relieving people of the pain and constant irritation caused by the bunions. Another common recommendation from experts is to wear leather or suede shoes that are comfortable and bend due to their flexibility at the toes instead of wearing rigid shoes which constantly chaff out the extension causing a lot of pain. One must understand that this is different from wearing shoes which have a rigid base to offer support to the heel and the arch of the foot.

Changing Activities

There are some habits that can be started   or changed to help eliminate bunion pain. Along with avoiding narrow or pointed toes, one can also go for padding especially in the area of the bunion to eliminate the bunion pain. These pads are available at drug stores or at normal shoe manufacturers too. Standing for too long or walking and running long distances should be avoided for a while to prevent aggravating the bunion pain and instead reducing the pressure on the feet as well. Applying an ice pack to the area of the bunion pain a few times everyday will help in reducing the irritation and the inflammation in the region.

Medical Options

Those suffering from bunion pain are usually recommended oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by doctors. These include drugs like ibuprofen. One can also go for acupuncture or applying arnica gel which provides relief to the area. Injection therapy which includes injecting the bunion area with corticosteroids to provide relief to the inflamed bursa that is the sac filled with fluids around the big toe joint is another way or resolving the bunion pain and discomfort. Podiatrists also recommend custom shoe inserts or footwear that is molded as per the design of the feet to provide relief from bunions. Bunion Surgery and Other Solutions

If one is looking for long term solution to the problem, bunion surgery could be an option. There are many different surgical treatments and procedures to get rid of bunion pain that include removing the bony bump or protuberance that that has formed. These procedures involve changing the structure of the bone and modifying the tissue to provide relief from the pain. The level of activity of the feet, age, and the extent of the deformity are all considered by ankle surgeons before deciding upon the best method to go about. Bunion pain can be avoided permanently through surgery, although the pain itself can be reduced through medications, massage and less activity.
